If you are a 4×4 trail enthusiast, here are a few amazing 4×4 trails you can visit in South Africa:

Bass Lake Adventures in Johannesburg, Gauteng

The adventure resort has a 14 km long 4×4 trail with technical sections. It’s open 5 days per week, depending on the weather. The full trail takes about 3 hours to complete and includes ascent, descent and water sections.


Nossob 4×4 Eco Trail in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park,  Northern Cape

Enjoy a 4-day adventure between the Twee Rivieren and Nossob rest camps. Nossob 4×4 Eco Trail offers a guided trail where you can view wildlife during your journey. Smaller one-way trials can be done in a day.


Caracal 4×4 Eco Trail in Namaqua National Park, Northern Cape

From mountains to coast, the Caracal 4×4 Eco trail allows you to experience a wide range of Namaqua habitats. You can complete this trail in one 6-8 hour-long journey or do it in sections.


3 trails in Mountain Zebra National Park – Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape national park offers three trails, namely the Umngeni Trail, which is the most challenging of the three and takes about an hour to complete, the Juriesdam Trail, which is a little longer and explores the eastern plateau, and the Sonnenrust Trail, which is the longest trail and explores the north-western section of the park. The trails are rocky and have some challenging descents and, if you go during the rainy seasons, you can experience some exciting water crossings.

For experienced drivers, the Pienaars Pass Trail offers a challenging route. For a more relaxed drive, you can enjoy the Nuweveld Eco Trail, which is about 50 km long and features some sand river crossings and steep rocky parts as well as the Afsaal Eco Trail, the Kookfontein Loop and the Sandrivier Loop. The routes are extremely scenic.
