The fuel increase is something that affects all of us – even if you don’t own a car. The price of your favourite dessert at your favourite convenience store has just increased because it now costs more to deliver it to the store.

According to Neil Roets from Debt Rescue, if you make clever decisions regarding your money, you won’t feel the fuel increase too hard on your pocket. To cover the cost of the fuel increase, we will have to cut back on expenditures. So, how can you save more this winter?

Walk or Carpool

While walking in the middle of winter doesn’t sound like the ideal thing to do, you will be pleasantly surprised at how good it can make you feel. Not only will it help to shed the extra kilograms we gain during winter, but it will also warm you up. A brisk walk could save you money on a gym contract and electricity costs. Walk the winter off and save more this winter. Not in the mood for walking? Why not carpool together with a friend, colleague or neighbour? If you live and work in similar areas, you could save a lot of money on petrol by sharing the cost.

Soup

Make this winter a souped up winter by making soup in bulk. When adding your ingredients, keep in mind that if you add a bit more, you could freeze it for later. That way you won’t have to use electricity or gas every single time you want to make a new pot of soup from scratch. You can simply reheat the extra batch you have already made, saving electricity and time.

Pass It On

Just because you don’t love that red jacket with the big black buttons as much as you used to, doesn’t mean someone else won’t. Why not get together with your friends for a glammed-up jumble sale? Make it a girls night and ask everyone to bring a certain number of items they don’t wear anymore. Then give them the option to either swap it for something else or sell it.

Spend More Time Indoors

Winter is the best time to snuggle under a blanket and watch a movie at home. Not only will you be saving on petrol, an expensive dinner at a restaurant and paying for parking, but you will also get to spend quality time with your loved ones. Light the braai and entertain your friends and family at home. It’s cheaper and cosier than a restaurant – what’s not to like?

If you’ve managed to save money this winter, but it’s still not helping you to get on top of your bills, speak to a reputable debt counselling company.
